Speaking Water . 2009

artists Elspeth Pikaar en Maria Ikonomopoulou location Ringdijk, Wilnis material ceramic, platina glazing size 53 x 500 x 57 cm commissioned by Municipality of Mijdrecht It is a monument marking the precise place in Wilnis where the dyke collapsed one night in August 2003, flooding a large part of the village.
The people of Wilnis shared their experiences of the momentous incident with the artists.Their accounts of the following day's devastation, the power of water and its significance were the ispiration for the piece. Designed as a vast seating element, the monument is covered in dark red-brown ceramic tiles overlaid with excerpts from these stories in platinum glazing.
